An Interview with Louise Herman

Readers: Make sure to leave a comment below with your thoughts or additional questions for the author 🙂 Thanks for following.

Thank you for taking the time to answer a few questions. Can you begin by introducing yourself, please?

I’m a teacher of Computing and a keen fantasy movie fan from the leafy suburbs of North London.

I absolutely adore any film from Guillermo del Toro (especially Pan’s Labyrinth, Devil’s Backbone and Cronos) and am a big 80s fantasy film fan (with my favourite’s including Labyrinth, Big Trouble in Little China and Blade Runner).

I also have a big passion for Anime and amslightly obsessed by the genius director, Hayao Miyazaki for his work on Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke and Howl’s Moving Castle.

From an early age I had always had a passion for writing stories which would take the reader to different fantasy worlds and realms. With a little confidence and the ease of publishing novels on the internet, I have now self-published five fantasy stories to date:

The Orcus Games Trilogy

The Orcus Games: Blood Moon (Book 1)

The Orcus Games: Mistress V (Book 2)

The Orcus Games: New Awakening (Book 3)

The Split Blood Series

Split Blood: The Ancient Codex – Part One (Book 1)

Split Blood: Rise of the Wolf (Book 2)

What made you decide to start writing?

I always loved creative writing in school and gained valuable feedback from my teacher who encouraged me to pursue my passion for writing further.

Unfortunately, I did not continue my writing after high school (other interests, lack of confidence and college work took presidency) and it was only in the last ten years that I picked up one of my old stories and the ‘flame was reignited’.

How do you find your inspiration or where do you get your story ideas?

I absolutely adore fantasy, sci-fi and Anime films and find inspiration in the wacky characters and unique worlds in these story-lines.

I also love to listen to music when I write (Bjork, Evanescence and Royal Blood are in my top 3!) and it is not uncommon for a song to give me ideas about a new character’s personality or a new scenario.

Do you have a character that has been your favourite to write about?

I don’t think I have one favourite character because they are all unique but I did enjoy writing Faith’s character.

I liked creating her curious, fearless personality but I also enjoyed testing her boundaries with scenario’s that some teenage books shy away from.

I also enjoyed introducing Lily (the fairy) and am excited to show more about this torn character and how she deals with the rules set by her fairy circle and her conflicting human desires.

Do you have any vices?

I think my only vice would be listening to music whilst writing and it is not uncommon for me to write a character one way and then completely change them if another song gives me more inspiration and a better direction to take them in.

Is there another genre that you would like to try?

At the moment I would just like to focus on the YA urban fantasy genre, however I would not like to rule out testing my writing skills in another genre.

I love to read horror, suspense and thriller novels so these genre could be interesting to experiment with but at the moment I am happy writing about my paranormal characters and settings.

What do you do when you are not writing?

I am a computing teacher by day and this takes up a lot of my time but I do try to take some time out of marking, lesson planning and writing reports by watching films, listening to music and baking (a new hobby!).

If you could be a paranormal being, what would you like to be and why?

Now this is a good question.

I think I would be a good witch because I could still fit into human society but have my circle where I could create potions, practice spells and have hidden power (plus I’m pretty sure a few of my students have called me a ‘witch’ in the past so why not!)

Thanks again for taking the time to answer my questions. Is there anything else you would like to say to readers or fellow authors?

Fellow authors: I would just like to say that if you have writers block or are finding the self publishing process difficult, I have found that forums have been an excellent way to network, communicate and gain valuable advice from fellow authors who are in the same boat.

I can go from weeksand months of looking at the page and not knowing what to write but when I stop thinking about what to write and just look in a few forums, it really helps.

Readers: I would like to thank you all for taking the time to read this interview and to tell you that the third book in the ‘Split Blood’ series will be published by April 2016.
